FAIRY TALE

Straight rugby jocks turn gay in tonight’s Pride Movie Night presentation of Were the World Mine.
Super-cute Timothy gets beaten up at school, has “faggot” spray-painted on his locker and can only be himself around his sassy bestie, alterna-chick Frankie. Oh, he occasionally daydreams Broadway numbers and he has a crush on Johnathon, the captain of the rugby team. Sound familiar?
But when his eccentric English teacher casts him as Puck in a production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Timothy stumbles upon a magic purple pansy that makes everyone in his small-minded town come around to his way of thinking. Yep, he turns them all gay, starting (of course) with the hunk of his dreams.
Tom Gustason’s 2008 musical comedy, Were the World Mine, was a hit at Sundance and a New York Times Critics’ Pick. See it tonight when it screens at this month’s Pride Movie Night at Denman Cinemas (1779 Denman St.), 6:30 pm. Tickets $10 at the box office with $5 going directly to the Vancouver Pride Society.
Now that’s flower power.
