QUEEN OF THE GREEN

QUEEN OF THE GREEN

Meet the man behind the woman behind the movement for marriage equality in Ireland.

On May 22, 2015, Ireland became the first country to legalize equal marriage by popular vote.

On Saturday, the Just Film Festival is screening the documentary The Queen of Ireland, which traces the fight for LGBTQ rights through one of its most recognizable spokespeople, Rory O’Neill, AKA Panti Bliss (pictured).

Blunt, outspoken and hilarious, Panti was censured by the national Irish media, threatened with a defamation lawsuit by religious leaders and became a YouTube sensation and flashpoint for the movement.

And she won!

Maybe we should celebrate St. Panti’s Day from now on?

THE QUEEN OF IRELAND
Saturday at Vancity Theatre (1181 Seymour St.), 9pm to 11:30pm.
Tickets $10 online, $15 at the door.
