Thanks to consignment shops, your stylish wardrobe can be even better the second time around.
When it comes to clothing, we enjoy splurging at Holt or Harry, and can also troll the racks at H&M and Joe with the best of them. But we get our biggest jolts of retail therapy from consignment shops — the perfect solution for when the shopping spirit is willing but the wallet is weak.
A consignment shop (for those who may not know) is a store that stocks previously worn, label-heavy clothing and sells it at second-hand prices, splitting the profit with the original owner. It’s like a thrift shop, but without the musty smell and the need for a Purell rubdown. Here are our three favourite consignment shops and some of the great deals on offer.
P.S. We already snapped up all the bargains mentioned. Better luck next time.
TURNABOUT, 3112 W. Broadway, 604-731-7762
Only the West Broadway location of this consignment chain carries menswear. The emphasis here is on outerwear, denim, streetwear and casual labels with some very limited suiting. Fab Finds: Prada two-tone lace-up loafers for $110 (originally $550) and WESC sweater vest for $20 (originally ($120).
IN AGAIN CLOTHING, 1962 West 4th Ave., 604-738-2782
Menswear isn’t their strongest suit. But what they lack on the rack, they make up for on the floor. We are talking shoes. We tend to pop in weekly just to see what’s new. Fab Finds: Ferragamo loafers in brown and black crocodile for $210 (originally $800), never-worn, vintage Fluevog suede and leather lace-up loafers for $190 (originally $300).
SECOND SUIT, 2036 W. 4th Ave., 604-732-0338
We’ve christened this store “First Suit” because it carries a great array of men’s suiting — and not just three-button jackets leftover from the ’90s. Fab finds: YSL patent leather biker boots for $163 (originally $1,200). Emenigildo Zegna cashmere and wool blend suit, $560 (originally $2,500).
