Spot prawn season is here, get your fill while they last!
Spot prawn season is here, get your fill while they last!
Once a year, we’re graced with a short but sweet spot prawn season. Not only are these coastal crustaceans delicious, they are local and sustainable, making them a great homegrown alternative to farmed tiger prawns. Many restaurants around town are now featuring spot prawn specials – here are a few of our faves worth checking out.
Maenam (1938 West 4th. Ave.)
Chef Angus an is cooking up a Thai spot prawn feast featuring seven different preparations, including satay, soup, salad, ceviche, stir fry and more! Enjoy them all (plus dessert) for $65, or choose a la carte.
refuel (1944 West 4th Ave.)
Every Saturday this month, refuel will host their famous Spot Prawn Boil. $65 scores you a seat at the bar to enjoy watercress and new potato salad, a simmering pot of B.C. spot prawns, housemade chorizo, clams and spring vegetables and the refuel peanut parfait for dessert. Only 12 seats are available (6 pm and 8:30 pm seatings), call 604.288.7905 to reserve.
Le Gavroche (1616 Alberni St.)
From May 14th to June 30th, Le Gavroche goes bi … coastal that is, with a menu that pairs B.C. spot prawns with Atlantic lobster. A mere $35 gets you a three-course meal featuring lobster and spot prawns in various French preparations. Splurge and spend the extra $25 for Le Gavroche’s legendary wine pairings.
Go Fish (False Creek Fisherman’s Wharf)
So cool it doesn’t even have a web site! Stop by this uber-popular Granville Island fish shack for their daily spot prawn features and a view that can’t be beat. A visit today will snag you spot prawns sauteed in chipotle butter for $12.
