Yaletown got a whole lot loungier this week with the opening of Society, by the Glowbal Group.

The 1200-block of Hamilton Street has long been Yaletown’s most uninteresting block. A steady rotation of ho-hum restaurants have come and gone, with the notable exceptions of Rodney’s Oyster House and the award-winning Coast. But when Coast moved to its new location on Alberni Street, it left poor Rodney all by his lonesome. Well, until yesterday.

In Coast’s old location, the Glowbal Group has opened Society, a sultry Los-Angeles-style dining lounge designed by Vancouver’s Box Interior Design. Outisde, there’s a heated 40-seat patio. Inside, giant pink Murano glass chandeliers dangle above purple and white leather booths and banquettes. A quick trip up the stairs reveals a hidden loft-lounge with plush velvet couches (and more leather, of course).

While the setting is sexy and sophisticated, the food is anything but (in a good way). Society’s menu features “re-imagined” comfort foods, like Tomato Soup with Mini-Grilled Cheese Sandwiches ($8), Baked Mac & Cheese ($14) and “Shake N Bake” Chicken ($16). You can finish things off with freshly fried Doughnut Holes dipped in white chocolate and crème anglaise ($8) or a Rocky Road Brownie ($8), and wash it all down with a Bourban Milkshake ($8).

Where else can you sit around looking fabulous over milkshakes and Mac & Cheese?
