TAKIN’ IT TO THE MAX

TAKIN’ IT TO THE MAX

Max’s Burgers brings gourmet burgers to the Cambie Rise.

So, there’s one silver lining to this whole sucky economy thing: the rise of the burger joint.

From Davie Street’s American Cheesesteak Factory, to downtown’s Sunset Burgers and Dougie Dog, to Gastown’s Meat and Bread, to the folks at Splitz Grill on Main Street, serving up meat on bread is a booming business.

Add the newly opened Max’s Burgers to that list. The wood-paneled burger shack on Cambie Street came together after a few beers and bets between chef Connor Butler (the meat) and Bruce Redpath (the bread — literally, he also owns Stuart’s Bakery). The outcome is every meat-lover’s dream, with carnivorous creations like the customizable five-ounce Big Max ($9, pictured), the ancho chili-laden Super Schloppy Joe ($12.5) and the Rooster on a Tailgate chicken burger slathered with chipotle mayo.

But we fell hardest for the milkshakes. Flavours like Orange Creamcicle, Fraser River Mud and Strawberry Cheesecake benefit from a not-so-secret ingredient: booze. They’ll even whip up a tequila paralyzer float.

Any restaurant that pairs meat with bread and hard alcohol with soft serve is a restaurant we want to visit.
