Few Vancouver restaurant openings have been as anxiously awaited as MARKET, the newest (and first Canadian) addition to superstar chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s global restaurant empire.

MARKET, located in the Shangri-La hotel, is divided into four dining areas – patio, cafe, bar, and dining room – so whether you’re in the mood for a formal dinner or a quick nibble after a long shopping trip to Burberry (located downstairs), they have you covered.

Jean-George’s mastery of Asian flavours has resulted in a menu filled with fabulous fusions like Tuna Wasabi Pizza ($12), Sea Urchin Toast with Yuzu and Jalapeño ($12), and Grilled Rack of Lamb with a Smoked Chili Glaze ($29), alongside classic Western flavours like Black Truffle & Fontina Pizza ($16), Butternut Squash Soup ($8) and Parmesan Crusted Organic Chicken ($20).

Desserts at MARKET are equally as appealing, with options like a light and refreshing Passionfruit Pavlova ($8) and a delicious Caramelized Banana Cake with Crunchy Praline and Caramel Ice Cream ($8). (Yeah, it’s as good as it sounds.)

Even the cocktail list shows off Jean-George’s Asian flair, with exotic offerings like a Ginger Margarita or Raspberry-Lychee Bellini (both at $10). And although the words “interesting” and “non-alcoholic” rarely go together, MARKET also offers interesting non-alcoholic options like homemade Passionfruit-Chili and Cherry-Yuzu sodas ($5).

Thankfully, despite Jean-George’s rock-star status, MARKET has kept prices in check, with most starters in the $8 to $15 range and entrees around the $18 to $28 mark. Or, why not splurge on Jean-Georges signature 6-course tasting menu? At $65, it’s a bargain, considering its $148 price tag at his flagship restaurant in New York.

Either way, a trip to MARKET won’t cost a pretty penny, unlike that trip to Burberry.
