Boys and girls in Speedos, need we say more?

If you’re looking for a fun and challenging way to make good on your New Year’s fitness resolutions, the English Bay Whiskeyjacks water polo team wants you!

Known as one of the toughest sports in the world, water polo combines speed, strength and skill … with the added cardio of trying not to drown. (If you’re not quite sure what water polo is, check out this quick video.)

LGBTQ-friendly water polo is a global affair, with teams in cities like Toronto, London, Paris, Sydney, New York, Atlanta, San Francisco and Los Angeles (pictured in all their glory). Every year there are a series of friendly tournaments leading up to the International Gay & Lesbian Aquatics (IGLA) championships in the summer. This year IGLA will take place in Miami and next year it will be part of the Gay Games in Paris.

The Whiskeyjacks are a co-ed team that spans a wide range of ages, skill and experience, and they are looking for new recruits! Beginners are welcome – previous experience is not required and the only prerequisite is the ability to swim two full lengths of front crawl.

The team trains every Thursday night and their first practice of the 2017 season is this Thursday, January 12th, from 8:15 to 9:30 pm at Kerrisdale pool. For January, new players are invited to try two trial practices for free.

For more information on joining the team, email englishbaywhiskeyjacks@gmail.com or come out this Thursday.

Go on, make a splash!
