Prime your Pride pump with these smaller festivities in Surrey and Victoria.

With Vancouver’s Pride celebrations still a month away, you might be finding it hard for you to keep all your homo joy bottled up for the August long weekend. Luckily, two smaller Prides take place this weekend where you can let out just enough glitter to keep yourself on the straight and narrow until then.

Yes, the ‘hood at the end of the SkyTrain line has gays — and not just the down-low kind. The newly renamed Surrey Pride Society is expecting over 2,000 people for the 12th annual Surrey Pride Festival on Sunday, July 8 from noon to 6 pm at Holland Park. (Not to be confused with the other Holland Park, Eddie’s tony London neighbourhood on Ab Fab.) Free live entertainment includes sets by Matthew Presidente and Sugarbeach. Visit www.surreypride.ca for more info.

Hop on a ferry, then hop on a fairy this Sunday, July 8 when the capital city named after a queen celebrates its LGBTQ community with the annual Victoria Pride Parade and Festival. The action starts at noon with the parade passing in front of the Parliament Buildings and ending at MacDonald Park. A big-city wrap up party follows at Paparazzi Nightclub featuring Vancouver drag queens Gouda Gabor, Iona Whip and Empress XL Kamelle Toe. Visit www.victoriapridesociety.org for more info.
